Tank, tankless or heat pump hybrid: which suits your house
| Standard tank | Tankless | Heat pump hybrid | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot water supply | A fixed amount, then recovery time | Continuous, limited by flow rate | A fixed amount, with slower recovery in heat pump mode |
| Space | Floor footprint in one corner | Wall mounted and compact | Tall, and needs open air around it |
| Utilities | Gas or electric, usually as it was | A larger gas line or heavy circuit is common | Electric, plus a condensate drain |
| Venting | Gas tanks use a flue | Dedicated vent, often plastic if it condenses | No flue, but airflow is required |
| Upkeep | Flush and anode rod check | Descaling on a schedule | Filter, condensate line and flush |
| Fits best | A straight replacement | Tight space or many baths in use together | An electric home with a roomy utility space |
A hybrid cools and dries the air around it. That helps a damp basement and works against a small closet.
The parts that go with the heater: expansion tank, relief discharge, venting, gas
A water heater is more than the tank. A temperature and pressure relief valve needs a discharge pipe that runs safely to where hot water can do no harm. Where the system is closed, for example with a backflow device or pressure reducing valve on the incoming line, an expansion tank gives the heated water somewhere to go.
Gas units add a flue or vent run, a gas shutoff, a sediment trap and, for tankless, sometimes a larger gas line. Electric units add a breaker and wire sized to the elements. We walk the route from the old unit to the new one before we quote, because that is where surprises hide.
If a gas line needs to move or grow, our plumbing installation work covers it. If you want to compare on-demand heating more closely, the tankless water heater page goes deeper.
Four signs to plan an install before the tank decides for you
Mineral buildup speeds all four, so a water softener or filter is worth raising at install time.
Rust at the base or fittings
Orange stains on the top connections or around the bottom mean moisture is working on the steel.
Rumbling or popping
Sediment on the floor of the tank traps water that boils beneath it, and the noise follows.
Shorter showers
Hot water that runs out faster than it used to suggests lost capacity or a failing element.
A damp drain pan
A pan that is never quite dry can be the first warning of a slow leak.
Allendale: new construction, condos and rentals
The township added 2,053 housing units between 2010 and 2020, and about 32% of all units were built since 2010. That has two practical results. Replacements in the newest homes are one or two decades away, and installs in new builds, condos and rentals are a regular part of the work.
If you are buying a newer house, note the model and the manufacture date on the rating plate now, and check the vent route and relief discharge while the house is still tidy. Landlords and property managers with several units can ask us to match the same model across them, which keeps parts and procedures consistent. Across the river in Walker, homes have a median build year of 1984, so replacements come sooner there.

What to prepare before install day
Clear the path
Leave an open route from the door to the old tank and a few feet of space around it.
Know the fuel and size
Read us the label on the old tank. It speeds up the price and the parts order.
Tell us about access
Mention stairs, tight closets, a condo or apartment unit, and whether an owner or manager needs to approve the work.
Plan for no water
The supply is off while the tank is swapped. Fill a few containers and plan showers around it.
From first call to hot water
Call and describe
Tell us the fuel, the space and what you want from the heater. We help you pick between the three types.
Price before work
After looking at the site we give you a clear price, including venting, gas, electrical and discharge work.
Install day
We set the unit, connect water, gas or power, fit the relief valve and discharge, and test for leaks and combustion.
Permit and inspection
In Allendale Township, plumbing and mechanical permits and inspections go through Professional Code Inspections. Ask your inspector which edition of the code applies, since Michigan currently adopts the 2021 International Plumbing Code.
What changes the cost of an installation
We give you a clear price before work starts and do not quote dollar figures online. Five things move the number most.
A standard tank, a tankless unit and a heat pump hybrid have very different equipment and labor.
Switching between gas and electric adds a circuit or a gas line plus venting.
A new flue or a plastic vent run through walls costs more than reusing a sound existing one.
Expansion tank, discharge piping, pan, shutoff valves and sediment trap all show up on the list.
Condo closets, finished basements and long pipe runs add time.
