Softer Wyoming water, Grandville sewers, and what that changes in a house
Township public works describes itself as a distribution system only. Wyoming produces the water, while Grandville treats the sewage across the Kent County line. A pressure drop on your whole block points at the utility before it points at your pipes, so ask a neighbor before calling anyone.
The township's 2025 water quality report prints hardness between 89 and 108 mg/L, averaging 99.19. That is roughly 5.8 grains per gallon by our conversion, softer than the Grand Rapids-supplied water Allendale gets. A Jenison water heater collects scale more slowly as a result, and a softener set up for harder water elsewhere will use more salt than this supply needs.
Jenison at a glance
Three Jenison problems, in the order we would check them
The median home in the Jenison census area dates to 1973 (1977 across ZIP 49428), and about 88% are owner-occupied, so most repairs are an owner choosing between fixing and replacing.
Sewage coming up a basement drain
The township requires backwater valves on new homes only, and says many older homes lack one. A house is more exposed when its lowest drain sits under 24 inches above the nearest upstream manhole. Start with drain cleaning, and ask about sewer line cleaning if the clog keeps returning.
A sump pump that cycles all spring
Township rules keep footing drains, eave troughs and sump pumps out of the sanitary sewer, and the township inspects for it. If your pump discharges anywhere but outside, sump pump work should reroute that discharge.
A water heater from the last owner
A house built around 1973 has almost certainly been through a tank already. Rust at the base, water on the floor or a tank past its second decade points toward water heater replacement, not another repair.
Before we arrive in Jenison
Stop the water
Turn the main shutoff to closed. A gate valve turns clockwise until firm, a lever handle turns a quarter turn. Then open the lowest tap to drain the pipes.
Check the power
If water is near outlets, a panel or the water heater, flip those breakers only when you can reach the panel on dry floor.
Clear the spot
Move rugs and boxes off the wet area and set a bucket under any steady drip.
Call the line
Ring the 24/7 line and give the street, what the water is doing and whether the main is already off.
Water spreading across a Jenison floor right now?
Shut off the main, then call. A dispatcher takes your address and sends a plumber from Allendale.
Call (855) 575-2890Paperwork: where permits and backflow questions go
The township does not accept plumbing permits. They go straight to Professional Code Inspections, whose local office is at 1913 Baldwin St in Jenison. If your job needs a permit, file there, not at the township hall at 1515 Baldwin St.
Georgetown also runs a cross connection program. Its page lists water softeners, lawn irrigation, water-assisted sump pumps and boilers as residential examples, and Chapter 58 of the township code covers the subject. If you own any of those, ask the township what backflow protection it expects.
Pressure dips: irrigation hours and a new water main
On June 19, 2024 the township used 3,813,300 gallons between 5 and 9 a.m., driven by lawn irrigation, and it has planned a larger main from Wyoming. A weak summer-morning shower can come from demand, not from a failing valve in your house, so test a tap at midday first.
Phase 2 of a 24-inch transmission main runs April through November 2026 on 48th Ave and Baldwin St. If your pressure changes while crews work nearby, call township public works before paying for a leak search.
Next-door towns
Hudsonville sits just south of Jenison and also drinks Wyoming water, but it buys that water through Ottawa County and sends its own sewage to the same Grandville plant. Its page is Hudsonville. Marne, to the northeast, mixes township utilities with private wells and has its own Marne page.
