Clean it again, or repair it?
A sewer line cleaning fixes a blockage. A repair fixes the pipe. The signs below tell us which one you need.
A cleaning may be enough when
- It is the first backup in years.
- The camera shows grease, wipes or a soft clog and no damage.
- The pipe is sound, with no offsets or cracks.
- Scale or roots are light and the joints hold.
Repair is the better call when
- The line backs up again within weeks of a cleaning.
- The camera shows a crack, a hole, a sag or an offset joint.
- Roots enter at the same joint every time.
- A section has collapsed and the cable cannot pass.
Backed up and cleaning did not hold: right now
- Stop using water so the line stops filling up.
- Keep children and pets away from any floor water.
- Do not dig on your own. An underground utility can be anywhere along the route.
- Call the 24/7 line. We can clear the line to get you through the night, then plan the repair in daylight.
Repair methods compared by situation
| Situation | Spot repair by dig | Trenchless lining | Full replacement by trench |
|---|---|---|---|
| One cracked or broken section | Fits well | Possible | Rarely needed |
| Pipe cracked or rooted along a long run | Many digs | Often fits | Fits if the pipe is failing everywhere |
| Pipe collapsed or badly offset | Fits | Usually not | Fits |
| Deep line under a driveway, patio or trees | Disruptive | Often preferred | Last choice |
| Line sags and holds water (a belly) | Fits | Does not fix the slope | Fits |
| Camera not yet run | Too early | Too early | Too early |
The camera result decides. We explain what we saw and why one method fits better than the others.
Pipe lining and trenchless repair: what it is and where it stops
Lining pushes a resin-soaked sleeve into the existing pipe through a small access point. The sleeve is pressed against the wall and cured, forming a new pipe inside the old one. It leaves your lawn, driveway or patio mostly intact.
It fits when the pipe is cracked, rooted or leaking at joints but still holds its round shape and its slope. It does not straighten a collapse, remove a belly or bridge a missing section. Those need a dig, and we will say so.
A lined pipe has a slightly smaller bore, and the pipe still has to be cleaned and cleared beforehand. We tell you how a lining would affect your case before you commit.
Cast iron pipe repair in older homes nearby
Cast iron was widely used for house drains in older construction. Allendale is young (median year built 2003), with only about 1,368 homes built before 1980 plus some rural farmhouses. Towns nearby skew older: Jenison's CDP median is 1973, Marne's 1976 and Hudsonville's 1982.
Cast iron fails from the inside, with rust scale that narrows the pipe, or from the outside, with cracks and leaking joints. Signs include slow drains throughout, sewer smell, rust staining at fittings and flaking when pipe is tapped. Not every older house has cast iron, so we check rather than assume.
Repair can be a section swapped for plastic pipe, or a lining if the shape holds. Full replacement is considered where the whole run is thin. If you own an older rental in Marne, a camera look before buying is cheaper than a surprise later.
Drain pipe repair inside the house
A broken drain pipe under a slab or inside a wall is a smaller version of the same problem. A crack at a joint or a hole from an old nail shows up as a damp patch, a smell or a slow drain that clears and returns. We find it with a camera and, where the pipe is hidden, with leak detection before opening the floor.
Before anyone digs: MISS DIG 811 and permits
Anyone digging must call MISS DIG 811 at least 3 business days before. The call is free, applies to any project regardless of size, and gets public utility lines marked. Private lines, such as your sewer lateral, a sump discharge, irrigation or yard lighting wire, are not marked. That is why the camera and a line trace matter for your own pipe. If a new water line is part of the dig, see water service line repair.
In the township, plumbing permits and inspections go through Professional Code Inspections. Ask us and the inspector whether your job needs a permit. Michigan's plumbing code currently adopts the 2021 International Plumbing Code, so ask your inspector which edition applies to your permit.

How a sewer repair job moves from call to finish
Clear and look
We open the line if it is blocked, then run the camera to see the damage. Nights and weekends use the same process.
Choose the method
We go through dig, lining or replacement with the picture on screen.
Price and prep
You hear the price before work starts. MISS DIG 811 gets called, and the permit question goes to the inspector.
Repair and test
After the work, we run water through the line and check it again by camera.
What drives the cost of a sewer repair
A sewer repair can be a short spot fix or a long replacement. These factors set the range.
A shallow short run is far simpler than a deep long one.
Lawn, driveway, patio and trees change how the work is done and restored.
Dig, lining and replacement each carry different labor and materials.
Old cast iron or clay may need more than the failing section.
Permit costs and time for MISS DIG 811 are part of the job.
