What hydro jetting does, in plain terms
A jetter pushes water down a hose to a nozzle with several small openings. Some face backward, and the water leaving them pulls the nozzle forward along the pipe. Others spray at an angle and scour the wall as it passes. The loosened material is carried ahead of the water to the cleanout or the sewer.
Two ideas matter here. Pressure is the force of the water at the nozzle. Flow is how much water moves per minute. Pressure cuts and strips. Flow carries the debris away. Good work balances both and picks a nozzle for the pipe size and material, rather than turning everything to maximum.
A cable cuts a channel and leaves the pipe wall coated. A jetter cleans the wall itself, which is why grease and scale tend to stay away longer afterward. We will not promise a number of years, because that depends on what goes down the drain after we leave.
Is jetting the right tool for your clog?
| What is going on | Jetting fit | Better first step |
|---|---|---|
| Grease lining a kitchen or main line | Strong | Cable only if the line is fully stopped, then jet |
| Mineral scale narrowing older pipe | Often good | Camera first to judge pipe condition |
| Tree roots at joints | Good with a root-cutting nozzle, but roots grow back | Camera to find the entry point |
| Sand, silt or packed debris | Good | None, jet and flush |
| Cable stops at the same spot every time | Hold off | Camera, because a break or offset may be there |
| Cracked, collapsed or very thin pipe | Not advised | Sewer line repair after a camera look |
This is a starting guide. The visit decides, and we tell you if what we find changes the plan.
Backup at the lowest drain: your first five minutes
- Stop all water use. Every gallon from a shower or washer ends up in the same blocked pipe.
- Check the lowest drains first, a basement shower, floor drain or laundry standpipe, because water rises there before it shows upstairs.
- Keep children, pets and bare feet out of any floor water, and do not use a wet vacuum on sewage.
- Call the 24/7 line. Tell us where water is coming up and whether the cable people tried earlier stopped at a certain distance.
When we will say jetting is not right
Water at jetting force can make a weak pipe worse. Old clay or cast iron with failed joints, a section that has settled out of line, or a pipe the camera shows cracked is not a pipe to blast. Orangeburg, the tar-paper pipe used in some mid-century homes, can deform under force.
In those cases we pull the nozzle back and run the camera first. If the picture shows damage, the better answer is sewer line repair or lining, and we explain what we saw instead of selling jetting anyway. A cleaning that leaves a collapsed pipe in place only moves the next backup further along.
Signs a main line needs jetting, not another snaking
The clog is back within weeks
A cable left a channel and the walls kept their coating.
Slow drains in every bathroom
The restriction is shared, not at a fixture.
Cable stopped short earlier
Something heavy or packed sits out in the line, such as grease, scale or a mat of roots.
Sewer smell near the cleanout
Wastewater is sitting in the pipe instead of flowing.
Allendale: township sewer, rural septic, and what jetting reaches
Much of Allendale Township is on the township sewer, which runs about 50 miles of main and 8 lift stations to the Water Resource Recovery Facility. Our jetting reaches your house line, the pipe from your foundation toward the street connection. It does not reach the township main. If several homes on your block are backing up, ask the township utility where its responsibility ends, and see sewer line cleaning for how we separate the two.
Farmland in the south and west is mostly on private septic under the Ottawa County Health Department. There, jetting clears the line between the house and the tank, which is separate from pumping the tank itself. Homes around Jenison skew older (median year built 1973 for the CDP), so scale and root intrusion show up more often in jobs there.

How an after-hours jetting call runs
Phone triage
We ask where water rises, whether a cable was tried and whether the house has a cleanout.
Access and a quick look
We open the cleanout and judge the pipe's condition. A camera comes in if anything looks doubtful.
Price, then jet
You hear the price for the work before we start. Same-day, nights and weekends use the same crew and equipment.
Flush and confirm
We flush the line, run water at the lowest fixture and explain what came out.
What affects the price of hydro jetting
Jetting costs more than a hand snake because the equipment, water and time are larger. These factors decide the final number.
A short 3 inch run and a long 4 inch run with a bend need different hose and time.
An outdoor cleanout is straightforward. A line with none may need a fixture pulled.
Grease and silt clear faster than roots and thick scale.
Checking the pipe before or after adds time and tells you what you are paying for.
After-hours, weekend and holiday calls are priced differently, and you hear the figure up front.
Cable did not hold?
Call the 24/7 line and tell us how far the cable went. We will say whether jetting or a camera comes first.
